哈佛大學2019年暑期經濟學科研招募

哈佛大學商學院


時間:5月15日~10月15日,每期3~4周


美國名校科研是一個為期3-4周,學生利用寒假、暑假在美國大學實驗室或科研組,憑借自身專業知識和興趣特長,完成教授和博士安排的量力而行的工作,並向教授和博士負責、匯報的科研學習計劃。美國科研就是背景提升,目標就是提高本碩博錄取質量。隨著教育國際化發展,出國留學的人數在不斷攀升。據統計,成功錄取到美國TOP30的申請者中,93.7%的學生擁有過硬的學術背景,其中以美國本土科研和美國本土競賽為主。以大陸一線城市上海為例,重點公立學校國際班的學生中,超過60%的學生托福成績在100分以上。在這種成績普遍水漲船高的情況下,申請美國大學不僅需要申請者具有合格的標化成績,還需要有豐富的學術背景。

哈佛大學,坐落於美國東部麻省波士頓的高水平研究型大學。因曆史、學術影響力、傑出校友等因素而獲評為世上最享負盛名的學府。故在美國有種說法是,先有哈佛,再有美利堅,可見哈佛大學的影響力。創建時間於1636年;教師人數有2100人;



項目背景


在最新的世界學術水平排行榜中,絕大部分都是美國的大學。由於美國大學與工商業、企業結合緊密,同時學校的教學資源、實驗課題及實驗設備都屬於全球頂尖狀態,從而成為眾多留學生的夢想留學目的地。

目前中國學生申請赴美留學人數日益劇增,以往美國頂尖名校選擇錄取GPA高分學生,後來校方逐漸發現學生在學習中缺少創新和實操的能力,進而導致美國名校錄取率的下降。近些年,招生官對選擇學生時更加看重的是自主創新、專業技能、思維創造才能等綜合素質人才。對於計劃入讀美國名校的學生,實際的科研經驗無疑可以提升競爭力,從而大大增加被名校錄取的概率。

Re: Letter of Recommendation for XU Henna

Dear Admission Committee,

It is truly my great pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Mr. XU Hen an, in supporting his acceptance into your esteemed graduate program. I got along with him for months at the Financial Research Program organized by Harvard University, and as his tutor, I feel that I am eligible to make some remarks about his potential for success in grad school. So this letter is more about his logic mind, analytical skills, and research aptitude.

As a young member in our high-powered research team in Harvard University, Mr. XU earned respect right away for being a clear-thinking, articulate team player who could quickly grasp the core parts of every concept, such as neoclassical theories of finance, difference between internal and external financing, asymmetric information, moral hazard and adverse selection; and that paved his theoretical foundation necessary for future research. In the phase research on relationship between investment level and financial constraints, he was engrossed into more in-depth logic of how to put theories into practical cases, and applied VAR to evalsuate the relationship between different variables in time series. During our interaction, he showed himself to be highly dedicated, extremely keen on developing his profession, and hence become my right-hand man. His analytical acumen brings to our team each day a professional maturity far beyond his years.

通過美國名校科研老師的指導,申請到了美國大學的科研機會。本文是學生在美國大學科研學習期間所寫的感受,真實、自然。由於學生臨近申請季,國內的大學課程緊張,沒有時間赴美科研,選擇線上指導。美國科研申請老師,特意與哈佛大學老師溝通,安排正常的科研指導外,還安排1名助教為學生輔導作業,在科研結束後,學生不僅收獲推薦信、科研證書、科研履曆,還順利發表學術論文一篇。在學生的科研感受結尾處,附錄了學生的科研筆記、科研論文、推薦信文稿,供學生、家長參考。


Scientific research experience

The experience of researching for one month with Harvard University professor is unforgettable. The mentor always offers us help with his patience in the realm of doing research. Firstly, he gave us four papers involving the investment behavior and the financial development. He commanded us to read literature and learn something new that I never get in touched with before. In the first meeting on line, my mentor told us our final target of this project. In the next meeting, my mentor leaded us to analyze the structure of the article, imparted to us about the information contained in the article.

 

Through the study of one month, I gradually become mature about the scientific research. Previously I do not know about how to accomplish a study. Now I Know that an eminent research must go through hardworking. One has to read thousands of articles first, then find data that suits his research direction. At the same time, he should be versed in mathematical modelling for exploring the nature of the research clearly. What is more, he should learn some knowledge of computer programming to deal with the data and finally obtain the satisfied conclusion through his own analyzing. If one masters the abundant knowledge of mathematical, economics and computer, he may make a difference in scientific research.

I have learned a lot through the research experience, I think it will be a rewarding experience for me to keep moving forward on the road to financial learning and researching!

 

通過這段時間的金融學科研,我學到了很多東西,我認為在金融學習和研究的道路上繼續前進對我來說將是一次有益的經曆!

During the program, Mr. Li initiated a research project named Factors affecting the investment of listed companies in China: Evidence from panel VAR. From selecting the topic at the beginning, to reading academic journals on listed companies and panel VAR, collecting the data, writing reviews and making the presentation PPT, Li was an active participant throughout the process, presenting earnest and inquiring attitude. The data they collected during the process integrated the main financial index and governance structure index of the two databases. By using Sta ta, they have treated the data with a more methodical and rigorous attitude. In the final presentation, Li displayed good logical thinking, confidence and oral defense skills, which assured a good result for the speech. His presentation was spoken highly of not only by me, but also all the fellow students.

 

On top of that, I was more than glad to witness Mr. Li rapid growth in academic research capability. As I mentioned, he has conducted a presentation on investment of listed Chinese companies using VAR. They eventually generated an academic paper, at the end of which, he clearly listed all the cited articles and journals, which well demonstrated his academic rigor, as well as satisfying literature-reading capability. Through reading his paper, I believe that his findings contributed to the financial constraints and investments decisions by separating fundamental factors and financial factors that influence the investment. Specifically, impulse-response functions allowed people to obtain more obvious evidence of the importance of financial factors. Therefore, I believe that his paper could be applied to further exploration on the factors that influence the investment decisions made by enterprises. Also, such achievements have well satisfied my expectations for an undergraduate student, and I believe Mr. Li could keep forging forward to greater progress.
